Brrr!!! It’s getting cold in second grade!

With this cold and rainy weather we’ve had lately, all we’ve wanted to do is...HIBERNATE! We have been reading and enjoying the book, The Big Snow and learning all about animals that hibernate, migrate, or adapt. So we decided to give hibernating a try! We opened the windows, turned on quiet music, turned off the lights and snuggled into our sleeping bags for a long rest. To make it even more cosy, we wore pajamas and made snow! It was a great week! 

Elementary Christmas Program

The Elementary Christmas program is Thursday, Dec.6th at 1:00 and 7:00 pm. The title of this year’s program is “ A Cozy Cottage.”   All students in grades 1-5 are involved.  For the costume, this year all children in 1^st-5^th grade will wear pajamas (or pajama-like outfits, such as sweatpants and a t-shirt.)  There is no need to purchase pajamas for the program--they do not have to be Christmas-themed or anything special.  Christmas-themed is ok, but NOT required.  Regular school shoes or hard-sole slippers are fine.  Since the children will have to walk outside to get to the auditorium, regular slippers are not allowed.  Students will wear their pajamas on December 6^th for the 1pm and 7pm shows.

Indian Mounds field trip

We had a cold, but fabulous day at the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds yesterday. Our second graders enjoyed God’s beautiful creation while learning about really cool history right here in our city. 

Publix Partner Card

Is my Publix Partners card still valid?

Stores will continue to scan Publix Partners cards through September 30, 2018, to allow our customers adequate time to transition. Effective October 1, 2018, Publix Partners cards will no longer scan or be accepted.

To support your school, sign up for Publix Partners through your Publix.com account (if you don't already have one) and select your desired school. Then, enter your phone number at checkout each time you make an eligible purchase.

Do I need to re-enroll every school year?

Yes. Enrollment in Publix Partners expires each July and you still need to sign up annually. Log into your account each July to select a school in your account settings.

“The Secret of a Long and Blessed Life”

Recently, I heard a radio broadcaster talking about the importance of training a child to look an adult in the eye when spoken to. This simple training teaches children the important lesson of valuing and respecting others. This respect should begin with training children to honor their parents. Indeed, honoring one’s parents is the first commandment with a promise. (Ephesians 6:2) Deuteronomy 5:16 tells us to “Honor your father and mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

         As we train our children to honor us as parents, we are teaching them to honor God and His sovereign plan for our lives. Honoring is exhibited in attitudes, words, and deeds. One way to train our children is to model honor and respect before them. As we seek to honor God, our own parents, our spouses, and the people in authority over us, our children are learning through osmosis the importance of respecting the chain of command God has given us. We can model this in various ways such as:

1.    Speaking well of them in public and private

2.   Seeking wisdom from them in challenging times

3.   Caring for them and their needs

4.   Listening to their concerns

5.   Praying for them

6.   Forgiving them

7.   Seeking for peace in these relationships

8.   Spending special times with them

9.   Seek to bring them joy!

10. Living your own life in a God honoring way to bless them

In addition to being a role model for your children, it is important to actively train them. Some ways to do this would be:

1.    Teach them to be obedient the first time you ask.

2.   Do not allow them to whine or complain without consequences.

3.   Never let them speak to you in a rude or dishonoring way without calling them out.

4.   Require that they speak to adults politely when an adult speaks to them.

5.   Require them to show restraint when in a gathering of adults.

6.   Do not let them interrupt an adult conversation unless it is an emergency.

7.   Teach them simple etiquette such as table manners, please and thank yous, yes ma’ams and yes sirs.

8.   Ask them to offer help to older people when there is a need.

9.   Teach them to talk respectfully of their teachers and to take responsibility for their own work.

10.         Pray with and for them concerning these issues.

When we exert the energy to train our children in these ways, we are giving them a gift which is immeasurable-- the secret of a long, happy, and well-lived life.

        

Pumpkin Science Lab

As we wrap up Halloween and all things pumpkin  our second graders enjoyed a fabulous science lab with Mrs. Bryant on Halloween day! 

First, she shared a fun and festive pumpkin story with the classes. 

Next, the students discussed and labeled pumpkin parts on their worksheets. 

Then, we made predictions about the pumpkins’ weight with and with out seeds, if the pumpkin would sink or float and the height and circumference of the pumpkins. Whew...lots to think about! Then, we got right to work to find out if our predictions were correct! 

Last, the students dug out all the seeds and pulp to count the seeds! What a great science lab full of hands-on learning! Happy Halloween!

Please send in: plastic lids, small plastic containers, paper towel/toilet paper tubes, assorted size cardboard/ plastic/foam pieces, craft- ribbons/ wire/ tapes/ thin burlap rope. Please make sure all items are washed and clean if needed.

Lower School ANNUAL FUND…. Please help us reach 100%. We are at 60% and will have the largest popsicle party in FPD’s history when we reach our goal! PLEASE consider a donation if you have not. Map Projects

Our Map Projects will be due FRIDAY, October 26th.  The project directions had a mistake on the due date, so we wanted to clear this up today. 

Half Days Next Week....

If your child needs to go to Viking Clubhouse or Viking Crew on Tuesday or Wednesday next week (half days), please call or email Sally Anne so that she can plan accordingly.  Also, be sure to send your child's teacher the orange half sheet indicating your pick up plans for Fall Festival on Tuesday. 

Fall Festival is Coming!

Our Fall Festival will be next week!  Each classroom in elementary is putting together a basket of items related to a certain theme to be a part of the silent auction.  All donations are voluntary.
There are no requirements for any grade level 3K- 5^th grade. 

Next Week

Our bible verse for next week is, "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols."  I John 5:21.  Your children will be asked to say the verse and reference on Friday, Oct. 19th.  Our spelling words for next week will be list 8.  You can find them to the right on this page in the spelling list section.  Please look in your child's red folder that is coming home TODAY!

Busy Bees

Second grade has had a busy week! Planting in the garden and our Homecoming Pep Rally are some of the few fun things we’ve enjoyed this week! Everyone have a wonderful long weekend!
