Blessings

This week we will just leave you with a short post rather than a long newsletter and link.
Mr. McDaniel came to speak to our students today about gratitude and sang some songs with our children.  What a joy!

Thank you for the many ways you have blessed us here at FPD.  It is an amazing place and you are a huge part of that.  We have so much for which to be thankful.

When we return from the Thanksgiving break, we will jump in with both feet and run quickly!
Here are a few things you will want to note:

Our next Bible verse is Matthew 1:21 "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." The students will complete an assessment by writing the reference and using a word bank to fill in missing words in the verse.

Unit 13 will be our next set of spelling words.

*Tomorrow! 11/22-Thanksgiving celebration at 2:15-you are welcome to come if you'd like!  Please send in your assigned item if you have not done so.  Thank you!
*12/12  Elementary Christmas Program at 1:00 and 7:00.
*12/13  2nd grade trip to sing at the Baptist Village and class party (specific times will be sent after the break)
*12/16 Elementary sing-a-long-10:30 a.m. and early dismissal
*NO SCHOOL for elementary on 12/17 or 12/18 as the upper school takes exams

One last thing for you all.  We found a beautifully written article about grief.  Our desire is to provide help and hope to all as we walk alongside the Greene family.  Thank you for loving them so well.

Counselor's Corner

Counselor’s Corner – October
“Decorations and Costumes”
by Susan Causey, Elementary Counselor

There are some decorations and costumes which fit for only certain times of the year. Yet, the bible tells us of decorations and costumes that are not only appropriate, but essential every day for living the life the Lord desires for us.
The decorations are the words of the scripture. In Deuteronomy 11 we are instructed to, “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your house and on your gates.”
The costume is the full armor of God found in Ephesians 6. This armor includes the “belt of truth,” “the breastplate of righteousness,” the gospel of peace for the feet, the “helmet of salvation”, and the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” These you need so that you may stand firm when the battles come.
What I have learned following a tragedy in my family is that God’s word is alive and it comes flooding back to you when you need it the most. It gives you peace, comfort, an eternal perspective, hope, joy, and trust. Be prepared and prepare your children. Make sure they are outfitted and decorated for the inevitable challenges in life.

Polka Dots

Sing and Dance in Your Polka Dot Pants!  This is the title of one of Eric Litwin's books.  He will visit FPD on November 5th, so plan for your child to wear some sort of POLKA DOTS that day!

Here is the note from Mrs. Putnal...

Students may wear a polka dot shirt, polka dot pants, polka dot skirt
(the other part should be uniform), polka dot dress, polka dot
hair bow/ties, …
Our goal is for staff and students to have on a “touch” of polka dots when our author visits😊

LIBRARY NEWS:
If you participated in the Birthday Book Club this year, your child should bring home that special book this week along with a “party in a bag” treat.  I hope your family will enjoy the book together and return it in two weeks so we can put it on the shelves for everybody to enjoy.  Thank you so much for participating!

We are so excited about our visiting author next month, Eric Litwin, on Tuesday, November 5th.  Have you returned your order form and check if you would like to buy any of his 10 books and have them autographed during his visit?  All forms and money are due by Tuesday, Oct. 8, in time for me to pre-order the books.

Your child’s author visit will be greatly enhanced if he or she frequents the links below on your phone or iPad.  In these links, your child will hear Eric Litwin reading his books, singing the accompanying songs, and even teaching the kids the dance moves that accompany his songs and books.  Please help your child be the star singer and dancer at Mr. Litwin’s presentation!

Map Project

Today your child is bringing home the directions for our first big project.  We have been learning about maps, directions, and features that can be found on maps.  It might be helpful to drive around in your neighborhood or community with your child, to allow them to sketch or take notes and make a rough draft before beginning on the poster board.  We will send home the poster board on Friday, 9/27.  Here are a couple of examples that might help your child get started. One of them is a community map, and the other is a neighborhood map.

Be sure to check our newsletter today for lots of details in 2nd grade!  Many of you may need to "allow" Adobe Flash on your computer for your child to practice the states.  The site is:
www.sheppardsoftware.com and a link is on the right side of the blog under Map Practice.  Our test is tomorrow and they will have a word bank with the state names.  We enjoyed sharing and learning about these states with the interesting objects brought in for today's State In A Bag!
